HRV has become the number everyone checks before deciding how their day is going to go. It is genuinely useful, and also widely misunderstood. Here is what it actually is, in plain words, and why breathing slowly changes it.
What is heart rate variability in plain words?
HRV is the variation in the time between your heartbeats. Your heart does not tick like a metronome. If your heart rate is sixty beats a minute, that is an average, not a steady beat every second. One gap might be 0.95 seconds, the next 1.05. Those tiny differences, added up and analysed, are your heart rate variability.
That wobble is a good thing. It means your nervous system is constantly making small adjustments, speeding the heart slightly, slowing it slightly, in response to breath, posture, thought and everything else. A heart that varies is a heart being actively steered.
Does higher HRV mean you are healthier?
Broadly, higher HRV reflects a more flexible and responsive nervous system, but your personal baseline matters far more than comparing your number to anyone else’s. When the calming, restorative side of your nervous system has a strong influence, the heart is being finely adjusted beat by beat, and variability tends to be higher. Under sustained stress, poor sleep or illness, that influence fades and HRV usually drops.
But the absolute number varies enormously between people for reasons that have nothing to do with health. Age, genetics, fitness history and even the device you use all shift it. One person’s normal is 30, another’s is 90, and both can be perfectly well. Comparing your HRV to a friend’s is like comparing your shoe size to theirs and worrying about it. What is meaningful is your own trend. If your HRV sits noticeably below your usual range for days at a time, your system is probably carrying more load than usual. That is information, not a verdict.
What is respiratory sinus arrhythmia?
Respiratory sinus arrhythmia is the natural pattern where your heart rate speeds up slightly as you breathe in and slows down slightly as you breathe out. It is completely normal, present in healthy hearts, and it is the main bridge between your breath and your HRV. Every breath you take is already nudging your heart. Slow breathing simply makes those nudges bigger and more rhythmic.
Why does breathing at five to six breaths a minute keep showing up in research?
Because somewhere around that pace, the breath rhythm and the body’s natural blood pressure rhythm line up, and the swings in heart rate become as large as they get. Your baroreflex, the system that constantly adjusts heart rate to keep blood pressure steady, runs its own slow cycle of roughly ten seconds. Breathe at five to six breaths a minute and each breath lasts about ten to twelve seconds, so the two rhythms fall into step. Researchers call this resonance. In practice it means the speeding up on the inhale and the slowing down on the exhale become pronounced, and measured HRV rises sharply while you breathe this way.
This is why so many studies of slow breathing settle on this pace, and why many people find it noticeably settling. You are giving the calming branch of your nervous system a strong, regular workout. The exact best pace differs slightly from person to person, so it is worth experimenting between about four and a half and six and a half breaths a minute and noticing where you feel steadiest.
Should you trust the HRV number on your wearable?
Trust the trend, not the score. Consumer wearables are reasonably good at tracking your direction over weeks, and much less reliable as a precise nightly measurement. A single low reading after a late meal, a glass of wine or a poor night means very little. A drift downwards over two or three weeks is worth paying attention to.
The trap to avoid is treating HRV as a grade you must improve. Checking the number anxiously every morning, and feeling worse when it dips, adds stress to a system you were trying to soothe. Some people genuinely do better not measuring at all and using felt sense instead, how their breath sits, how their jaw and shoulders feel, how quickly they settle after stress. A simple self test like the BOLT test can be a useful low tech companion, since it requires no device and reflects how comfortable your body currently is with steady, quiet breathing.
How does breath practice actually fit into daily life?
As a small, regular deposit, not a dramatic intervention. Within Mind Body Regulation, breathwork is one tool among several, alongside movement, attention and recovery habits, and the slow paced version is one of the gentlest ways in. A practical shape looks like this. Once or twice a day, sit comfortably and breathe at around five to six breaths a minute for five to ten minutes, in through the nose, exhale slightly longer than the inhale, everything unforced. That last word matters. Straining to breathe slowly defeats the purpose.
